Detailed game description:

Jawbreaker is an action maze video game released for the Atari 2600 by Tigervision in 1982. It was programmed by John Harris and is part of a family of unofficial adaptations inspired by the success of Namco’s Pac-Man. While the original Jawbreaker released on Atari 8-bit computers and Apple II

Jawbreaker (Atari 2600)
   Jawbreaker (Atari 2600)
closely mirrored the arcade maze formula, technical limitations of the Atari 2600 resulted in a version that, although derivative in theme, plays differently from both its predecessors and the arcade classic.
In Jawbreaker, the player controls a small, chomping set of jaws through a fixed maze filled with small dots. The objective is to eat all the dots while avoiding rolling enemies known as “jawbreakers” that traverse the maze; running into one causes the player to lose a life. Power-up items periodically appear that grant temporary abilities or point bonuses. Clearing all the dots completes the level and advances the player to the next, more challenging maze.
The maze design in the 2600 version differs from the original Atari 8-bit layouts: it features nine corridors connected by fixed side passages, and special bonus items appear in the center of the playfield rather than fixed corner positions seen in some computer ports. Due to the Atari 2600’s hardware constraints, the game’s graphics and enemy movement are simplified compared to its computer counterparts, but still capture the core “eat-all-the-dots” gameplay loop that was popularized by earlier maze games.
Critical reception for Jawbreaker on the Atari 2600 has been mixed in retrospective assessments. Some players describe it as a simplistic but enjoyable Pac-Man-like experience that can be suitable for younger audiences due to its lower difficulty and clean graphics, while others view it as a less engaging substitute for more polished maze games on the platform. Observers also note that it generally plays better than Atari’s own official Pac-Man port for the system, which was widely criticized at the time.
The Atari 2600 version of Jawbreaker was subsequently used as the basis for later ports to other home systems, and some releases used the same title or the alternate name Jawbreaker II. Although it never achieved the notoriety of the arcade original, the game remains a recognizable example of early maze action on the 2600 and of the wave of Pac-Man-inspired titles that followed the arcade hit’s success.
