Although several games based on the film appeared on other platforms, the Master System edition is a distinct production designed specifically around Sega's Light Phaser peripheral.
Unlike the earlier Rambo: First Blood Part II for the Master System, which is primarily an overhead action game, Rambo III takes the form of a shooting-gallery-style light gun game. Enemies appear at various positions across the screen and must be shot before their attacks deplete Rambo's health. The game frequently draws comparisons with Operation Wolf, another military-themed light gun shooter. The action is accompanied by digitized images and cinematic intermissions depicting characters from the film.
Rambo has two basic forms of gunfire. A limited supply of machine-gun ammunition allows the player to hold down the Light Phaser trigger for rapid fire, while normal single shots remain available after this ammunition has been exhausted. The player also carries a grenade capable of damaging everything currently on screen and a power drink that restores health; these items are activated by shooting their corresponding icons. The large number of simultaneously attacking enemies makes conserving health as important as accurate shooting, and the game is consequently known for its high level of difficulty.
The Master System version is substantially different from other adaptations of Rambo III. The Mega Drive game, for example, is predominantly an overhead action shooter, while the home-computer versions use yet another structure. The Master System edition instead commits entirely to Light Phaser gameplay, making the peripheral an essential part of its design. Its military setting, continuous waves of enemies and focus on shooting directly into the screen make it one of Sega's answers to the popularity of arcade-style gun games of the late 1980s.
Critical reception was mixed but included some highly positive assessments. MobyGames records an average contemporary critic score of 64% based on eight ratings. Computer and Video Games regarded it as the best Light Phaser game then available for the Master System, while Mean Machines later awarded it 89%, praising its graphics and gameplay and describing it as one of the system's best Light Phaser titles. Its demanding difficulty and relatively straightforward design may limit its appeal, but Rambo III remains one of the more notable games created specifically for Sega's light gun.
