| | From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: | Marksman Shooting / Trap Shooting / Safari Hunt is a light gun compilation developed and published by Sega for the Master System. It combines Marksman Shooting and Trap Shooting, which had previously appeared together on a cartridge released in North America in 1986, with Safari Hunt, another early Sega Light Phaser game. | | Marksman Shooting / Trap Shooting / Safari Hunt (Sega Master System) | The three-game compilation was released in Europe in 1987 and was designed specifically for use with the Sega Light Phaser. All three titles were also released individually in Japan for Sega's Master System-compatible Shooting Zone arcade hardware. Despite sharing the same basic point-and-shoot controls, the three games offer different types of target shooting. Marksman Shooting takes place at a shooting range, where targets appear briefly at different positions and the player must hit their red centers before they disappear. Trap Shooting instead recreates clay pigeon shooting, presenting moving discs that travel away from the player and must be shot before they disappear into the distance. In both games, progress depends on achieving the required qualification score; failure to reach it immediately ends the game. Safari Hunt is the most elaborate of the three games and is similar in concept to Nintendo's Duck Hunt. Armed with a limited supply of ammunition, the player hunts animals across three environments: a lake populated by ducks, fish and rabbits; a forest containing birds, armadillos and bears; and a jungle featuring spiders, monkeys, bats and panthers. Different animals move in different ways and are worth varying numbers of points, requiring the player to balance accuracy and ammunition conservation. The three environments repeat with increasingly demanding qualification scores, with the game ultimately ending after round 69. The compilation represents Sega's early attempt to demonstrate the versatility of the Master System's Light Phaser. Rather than providing a single shooting game, it offers traditional target practice, a simulation of a shooting sport and an arcade-style animal hunt on one cartridge. Safari Hunt also appeared alongside Hang-On on another multicart and was included as a built-in game in some versions of the Master System hardware, making it one of the more widely distributed early Light Phaser titles. Contemporary assessments of the compilation were generally moderate to positive. Collected period reviews average approximately 68%, with Sega Pro awarding it 60%, S: The Sega Magazine 70%, and Console XS 72%. Reviewers generally regarded the variety of its three shooting disciplines as a strength, although the repetitive nature and limited depth of the individual games restricted their long-term appeal. As a package, however, Marksman Shooting / Trap Shooting / Safari Hunt provides a representative showcase of Sega's early light gun gaming on the Master System.
