Armed with the Sega Light Phaser, the player progresses through a series of shootouts before eventually confronting the criminal leader known as Big Boss.
The game consists of six stages and presents its action from a first-person perspective. After an initial target-practice sequence, the player encounters gangsters in several different locations, including a car chase, the downtown streets, a saloon, a nightclub and the harbor. Enemies appear from windows, behind obstacles and at various positions around the screen, requiring the player to react quickly and shoot accurately. The game also includes bonus sequences, such as searching for a hidden key by shooting sections of a brick wall.
Rather than simply requiring the player to survive each stage, Gangster Town also keeps track of shooting performance. At the end of a section, statistics are displayed and the player's result is compared with a qualification score, encouraging repeated attempts to improve accuracy and overall performance. The player's health is represented by a row of hearts, which are depleted when the player is hit. This scoring-oriented design gives the relatively short sequence of stages additional replay value.
One of the game's more distinctive features is its support for two Sega Light Phasers simultaneously, allowing two players to shoot at the screen together in cooperative play. Gangster Town was also released in Japan for Sega's Master System-compatible Shooting Zone arcade hardware. Unlike the home version, however, the arcade cabinet supported only a single light gun. The Master System release appeared in North America and Europe, with Tec Toy later publishing the game in Brazil.
Contemporary assessments of Gangster Town varied considerably. MobyGames currently lists an average of 77% from ten contemporary critic ratings, while archived magazine scores collected by SMS Power include 54% from Sega Pro and 48% from both Mean Machines Sega and Computer and Video Games. Although its limited number of stages and straightforward mechanics made it a relatively simple shooter, the varied locations, emphasis on accuracy and unusual two-gun cooperative mode distinguish it among the Master System's Light Phaser titles.
