Detailed game description:

Face Off! is a sports video game developed by Mindspan Technologies and published by Gamestar for the Commodore 64 in 1987 and later for IBM PC compatibles running DOS in 1989. The title, a traditional ice hockey simulator, was released without an official professional league license, meaning all teams and players within the game are fictional, though customization options allow players to rename them.

Gameplay in Face Off! focuses on controlling a single hockey player at a time, with the ability to choose the number of players on each team and adjust period length and other match settings. In single-player mode, players can compete against the computer, while local multiplayer allows two human participants to face off either cooperatively on the same team or competitively against one another.
A defining feature of the game is its change of perspective during important play moments: when a player shoots and is close to the net, the camera switches to a special “Shot Cam” view, placing emphasis on the goaltender confrontation. Additionally, Face Off! includes occasional one-on-one fighting sequences triggered by fouls, as well as a “face-off mini-game” that plays out in a separate window to contest puck possession.
Beyond the basic match action, the game offers rudimentary coaching and management options, such as designing plays, managing team lines, and making trades, although critics have noted that these features are not particularly deep due to weak artificial intelligence and limited strategic impact. The lack of official jerseys and the simplicity of the AI have been mentioned as shortcomings, but overall the game’s fluid animation, smooth player movement, and inclusion of multiple gameplay modes were regarded as strong points for its time.
Critical reception for Face Off! has generally been positive, with reviewers highlighting its accessible gameplay and production values relative to other hockey games of the late 1980s. The title remains a notable example of early computerized hockey simulations and is remembered fondly by some retro gaming communities for its combination of sports action and arcade-style elements.
