From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

SkyRoads is a 1993 action-racing video game developed by BlueMoon Software and published by Creative Dimensions for MS-DOS. The game is a polished remake of the earlier 1990 title Kosmonaut and was distributed internationally through low-cost retail and shareware channels from the United States to Taiwan. It became well known for its simple yet addictive gameplay and distinctive space-themed courses.

Gameplay in SkyRoads involves piloting a small spacecraft along a series of straight, elevated courses suspended in space, often referred to as “roads.” Players must navigate these courses by jumping over gaps, avoiding hazardous tiles, and managing limited resources such as fuel and oxygen. Controls typically use the directional keys for movement and the space bar for jumping, with additional meters displaying current speed, oxygen, fuel levels, and progression through a level. The grav-o-meter reflects the effective gravity on each course, influencing how the ship handles while jumping and moving.
Each level ends with a tunnel that signifies successful completion, but failure to traverse the course before fuel or oxygen runs out, crashing into certain obstacles, or falling off the road forces the level to restart. Road tile colors have different effects on movement and resource levels: for example, blue tiles refill oxygen and fuel, light green tiles increase speed, dark green tiles decelerate, grey tiles cause slippery handling, and light red tiles are fatal if contacted directly. These mechanics create a blend of reflex-based platforming and resource management that challenges players to balance speed with precision.
SkyRoads contains 30 distinct roads spread across multiple themed areas and allows players to tackle levels in varying sequences, offering both linear progress and flexible exploration. Although minimalist in presentation, reviewers and players have praised the game for its engaging level design, strategic demands, and rhythmic progression, making it both more thoughtful and more punishing than many contemporary DOS titles.
The success of SkyRoads led to a follow-up titled SkyRoads: Xmas Special in 1994, which retained the core gameplay while introducing new, more difficult courses. The original and its sequel have inspired various fan projects, remakes, and level editors, reflecting the title’s enduring influence on independent and retro gaming communities.
